Ethernet cabling has three type:

1. Straight-through cable
2. Crossover cable
3. Rolled cable.

 

##Straight-Throught Cable

 

The straight-throught cable is used to connect:

  • Host to Switch or Hub
  • Router to Switch or Hub

There are only 4 pins are used in straight-through cable to connect Ethernet devices. 1, 2,3 and 6 are the pins that are used and just connect as below:

  • 1 to 1
  • 2 to 2
  • 3 to 3
  • 6 to 6

 

##Crossover Cable

 

The crossover cable can be used to connect:

  • Switch to switch
  • Hub to hub
  • Hub to host
  • Router direct to host

The same 4 pins are used like straight-throught, but connecting in different way as below:

  • 1 to 3
  • 2 to 6
  • 3 to 1
  • 6 to 2

 

##Rolled Cable

 

The rolled cable is used to connect host to swicth or router via console serial commnication (com) port. All 8 pins are used and connect as below:

  • 1 to 8
  • 2 to 7
  • 3 to 6
  • 4 to 5
  • 5 to 4
  • 6 to 3
  • 7 to 2
  • 8 to 1
