Meaning and use

Academic and professional writing often uses may, appears to, tends to, and suggests that to limit a claim. Hedging should reflect uncertainty, scope, or evidence, rather than simply make every sentence vague. Distinguish evidence for an association from proof of causation. A grammar choice can strengthen or weaken a claim.
