Writing a Short Past Story

Tell a simple event with a beginning, sequence, and ending.

Writing focus

A short story needs a setting, key events, and an outcome. Use past simple for the main completed actions and past continuous when you need background activity. Time markers help, but do not add one before every verb. Finish with the result or your reaction rather than stopping before the reader knows what happened.

រឿងខ្លីត្រូវមានបរិបទ ហេតុការណ៍សំខាន់ និងលទ្ធផល។ ប្រើ past simple សម្រាប់សកម្មភាពបញ្ចប់ ហើយ past continuous សម្រាប់ផ្ទៃក្រោយបើចាំបាច់។

Writing patterns

Pattern	Example or form
Setting	Last Saturday, I visited my aunt.
Background	It was raining when I arrived.
Main sequence	We cooked lunch and talked.
Outcome	I returned home feeling happy.

Examples

1. Last Sunday, we visited a museum.

   ថ្ងៃអាទិត្យមុន យើងទៅលេងសារមន្ទីរ។

2. While we were waiting, we met an old friend.

   ខណៈយើងកំពុងរង់ចាំ យើងបានជួបមិត្តចាស់។

3. The guide explained the history of the building.

   មគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍បានពន្យល់ប្រវត្តិអគារ។

4. We went home at five.

   យើងត្រឡប់ទៅផ្ទះម៉ោងប្រាំ។

Model writing

Last Sunday, my cousin and I visited the museum. While we were waiting near the entrance, we met our old teacher. She joined us for the tour and explained several interesting objects. After the visit, we had lunch together. We went home tired but happy because we had learned something new.

Common mistakes

Instead of	Use	Why
Yesterday, we go to the market and buy fruit.	Yesterday, we went to the market and bought fruit.	Keep finished past events in the past simple.
I was wait when she arrived.	I was waiting when she arrived.	Past continuous needs -ing.
